Feeling heard

Feeling heard is the sense that someone has understood what you said and why it matters to you, and has shown you they did.

Last updated October 21, 2026

You can do everything a good listener does and your partner can still walk away feeling unheard, because they never got a sign that it landed.

People need different signs, and they rarely say which. One person needs you to put your phone down. Another needs a follow-up question that proves you were tracking. Kamal Sarma’s WinWin Conversations framework calls these your rules for feeling heard, and the useful move is to ask for your partner’s rather than guess.

The simplest test is to ask, “Did you feel heard?” and believe the answer. It’s why every untangle ends on that one question.
