ChatGPT is a general AI with a free tier, and it only knows what it’s told, usually by whoever is typing. Untangle is an AI mediator for couples: Tara sits between you, each on your own phone, works from one method and checks you were both heard. It’s $25 a month for both of you, after 3 days free.

Choose Untangle if
it’s the fight you keep having and you want both of you in it. Tara hears you each on your own phone, gives you each a fair turn, never says who’s right, and ends by asking if you felt heard.
Choose ChatGPT if
you want to think out loud on your own, draft a message, or get a quick outside view for free. It’s also the pick if you want one general assistant rather than a couples app.
| Feature | Untangle | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI mediator for couples, in an iPhone app | A general-purpose AI chatbot |
| Who it hears | You both, each on your own phone | Whoever is typing. Group chats (since November 2025) let up to 20 people share a thread |
| Who’s right? | Never says. She makes sure both sides are heard | It only knows what it’s told, usually by one of you |
| Method | WinWin Conversations by Kamal Sarma, with Nonviolent Communication underneath, in 5 steps | No couples method built in. It answers what you ask |
| Your private side | Your partner sees nothing you wrote until you share it | Usually one partner types their side alone. A group chat is one shared thread |
| Price | $25 a month, 3 days free; your partner joins free | Free tier, plus paid Go, Plus and Pro plans |
| Research | No study of Untangle yet | A 2025 trial of a GPT-4o-based relationship chatbot (not ChatGPT itself) found one session about as effective as a brief writing task |
For some things, yes. It’s free to start, and it’s good for thinking out loud, drafting a message before you send it, or getting a quick outside view.
The catch is that it only knows what it’s told. When one of you types the fight in, it hears one telling of it. That’s not the chatbot being unfair. It just wasn’t in the room for the other half.
Since November 2025, ChatGPT has group chats for up to 20 people, on Free, Go, Plus and Pro.
That gets you both in one thread, but you’re still building the mediator yourself, prompt by prompt, with no method behind it. Untangle starts from one: Tara works from WinWin Conversations by Kamal Sarma, with Nonviolent Communication underneath, and every untangle follows the same 5 steps: what happened, how it felt, what you need, what you appreciate, what you’re asking for.
Tara sits between you. First it’s just you and her, about 10 minutes, to find what the fight is really about. Then she helps you turn what you feel into words your partner can actually hear. Your partner joins free from a link, and Tara takes turns, keeps it fair and checks you each were heard.
When it runs hot, she slows the room and gets three yeses before anyone tries to fix anything. It’s one idea from WinWin Conversations, and the app is where you practice it.
The research is early. A randomized trial published in PLOS Mental Health in September 2025 tested a GPT-4o-based relationship chatbot with 258 people, one partner from each relationship. A single session was about as effective as a brief writing task, and the authors noted generic responses and inconsistent spotting of safety concerns.
We have no study of Untangle yet, so don’t take our word for it. What we can tell you is how it’s built: two phones, one method, and a question at the end of every untangle: did you feel heard?
If you want to vent on your own, rehearse what you’ll say, or you’re not ready to bring your partner in, ChatGPT is free and does that well. If you already pay for it and use it for everything, that’s a fair reason to start there.
Untangle is $25 a month for both of you, after 3 days free. It’s for when the same fight keeps coming back and you want both of you heard, not just the one holding the phone.
Untangle is built on the WinWin Conversations framework by Kamal Sarma, with Nonviolent Communication underneath.
