Paired is built for the good days. Each of you has your own account, and you answer a daily question, a quiz or a game in your own time. It asks for about 5 minutes a day and has more than 1000 expert-led quizzes and games.
It’s big and well liked, with a large following, strong App Store reviews and an Apple Editors’ Choice (see the table). It also cites a study by the Open University and the University of Brighton, reporting a 36% improvement in relationship quality after 3 months. We have no study of Untangle yet, so that’s a real point in Paired’s favour.
Untangle is for a different moment: the fight you’ve had before, still going at 11pm, when no therapist is in the room. Underneath every one, one of you doesn’t feel heard.
Tara sits between you. First it’s just you and her, about 10 minutes, to find what the fight is really about. Then she helps you turn what you feel into words your partner can actually hear. Your partner joins free from a link, and Tara takes turns, keeps it fair and checks you each were heard. When it runs hot, she slows the room and gets three yeses before anyone tries to fix anything.
Paired’s homepage describes daily questions, quizzes and games, not a mediator for an argument that’s happening right now. That’s not a flaw. Knowing each other better on calm days can make the hard days easier.
If you’re looking for a Paired alternative for the argument itself, that’s the gap Untangle is built for. Every untangle follows 5 steps: what happened, how it felt, what you need, what you appreciate, what you’re asking for. It ends by asking one question: did you feel heard?
Paired is cheaper, and by a lot. Paired Premium is $79.99 per couple per year, only one partner needs to subscribe, and the yearly plan has a 7-day trial. Paired also runs promo pages offering 50% off Premium.
Untangle is $25 a month for both of you, after 3 days free, and your partner’s seat is always included. Nothing is charged until day 4, and on iPhone you cancel in Settings. The extra cost buys a mediator in the conversation with you, which is a different job from a daily question.
Yes. They do different jobs. Use Paired for a few minutes of connection on an ordinary day, and open Untangle when the fight you keep having comes back.
Neither one is a stand-in for professional help. Untangle is not therapy and not for emergencies. If there’s abuse, a safety worry or a crisis, talk to a trained person.
Untangle is built on the WinWin Conversations framework by Kamal Sarma, with Nonviolent Communication underneath.
